About the author

Lynley Dodd

Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. She went on to teach art before taking a break to start a family. She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes To Hide in Boxes. There was no looking back as Lynley went on to write and illustrate her own books for children. Exuberant artwork and bouncy rhymes come together perfectly in books like Slinky Malinki and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. As well as being a visual delight, these are some of the most rewarding books for children and adults to read out loud. It comes as no surprise that, as a child, she adored Dr Seuss because of his 'crazy sounds and the fact that he took such liberties with the English language.' Other favourite authors included A A Milne and the fairy tales of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. Today, Lynley is a big fan of Quentin Blake 'because of his humour and very clever art work.'

Praise for Zachary Quack Minimonster

The popular character Zachary Quack from the beloved Hairy Maclary author Lynley Dodd stars in his own big adventure as he chases a dragonfly through some very sticky situations...This book will be as loved as all of Dodd’s books with its fun rhyming text and cheerful illustrations.

Swings and Roundabouts

I was focusing on Dodd’s joyful language, but I know for any child being read to they will also be looking at the story happening within the illustrations. While the naughty little duck is going over the rake and leaves, who should be poking out from the corner but Hairy Maclary?...It is the perfect way to encourage visual literacy and teach kids how to follow a story – and what an enjoyable way to create our future readers.

Simie Simpson, The Sapling

A sheer delight for little readers, and a nice size so they can hold it themselves.

Linda Thompson, NZME

This is a great monster book for toddler storytimes. A little duck chases a dragonfly and makes a mess of himself, looking more and more like a monster the further he goes until he lands in the pond and everything gets cleaned off. Super cute.

Erin, Good Reads

The gorgeous little Zachary Quack gets himself into a right mess chasing a dragonfly. Too cute.

My two year old is rarely genuinely interested in his bedtime story, normally it's just a time for him to jump on mummy and daddy's bed, but with this one he will sit beside me, point at the pictures and is now joining it with the repeating phrases "flick, flick, flick" and "quick, quick, quick".
